One year ago I set out to take one photo each day and this weekend I finished this project!

Yesterday I took the last photo of the year: I first wanted to take an appropriate big "summary" photo but then I thought a trip to Birmingham's "Music Live" would be a good opportunity to see one of my 365 photos in all its glory as a HUGE print. So here it is... And this is the image it was based on: Sound Knowledge

To wrap up, I gotta say that I learned so much even if most days were rushed or uninspired. And looking through the streams and discussions of 365 Community gave me so many ideas and helped me tremendously along the way. It's more work than I thought it would be but mainly it's a great exercise of getting organised and plan your days right. Having my camera with me (which I now know inside-out thanks to this project!) has come in handy a few times at work but I still don't see myself as a photographer.

I'll see tomorrow if I can go one day without a photo but if not then I'll just start my second year...

Now that I checked my other photos of today I think this is one of the weaker ones. Some nicer ones are here.

This morning my girlfriend looked up a word in the dictionary and couldn't find it (it was a small pocket dictionary). It made me think about what would've happened if she had one of those electronic translators.

By using a book she found other words while looking for something else and she might just remember those in the future. She learned something new even-though she couldn't find what she was looking for. A nice side effect when trying to learn a language.

With an electronic translator you usually only get something like "no result" or if you're lucky you get "did you mean XXXXX?". Thanks to search functions you don't usually have to browse for what you need. Of course it's a lot more likely to find what you're looking for if you're using an electronic device but I'd love to see search results that also give you the previous and next entries (not just the related ones) and let you browse near a word instead of only giving the 100% relevant result.

After months (years?) of having the same collection of projects in the same website I got to a point where I decided that it's time for a change. This new site and blog is based on Movable Type which I learned to love in this transition period. It's unbelievably flexible and it seems to have a fairly solid backend.

Just like my last site, this is an experiment. Sure, there's a section with projects that is designed to be easily accessible but there are also bits and pieces that are purely there for testing and/or are not designed to be viewed by all browsers out there.

Talking about a certain browser takes me to another thing: I've ruined my homepage for Internet Explorer 6 users. They are taken to a page with blinking and moving text, horrible huge borders, "under construction" animations and other sins of the Internet from 2001. My normal front page did work in IE6 but I decided to add a different type of experience for people who haven't updated their browser in years. See below for the before/after:

Before:

After:

uhm.. yeah...
After reading about many ways of how to find this "point", I went with the one outlined here.

Here's how I set up my camera with a "basket" I found in the kitchen:

9.7 on the vertical one.

I'm still trying to fine-tune the settings and if you happen to have a similar setup I'd love to hear from you! I found the settings for the K10D somewhere on the web but they don't work for me and that's why I put this up.

It might help one of you to get started. If I refine the settings or decide to try it with the 17-70 I'll of course post that on here as well.

In the last week I started to take my camera with me every day to take at least one picture a day. I want to learn to pick what to take pictures of, how to select one picture out of a few and probably most importantly: delete the ones I don't want (that's probably the hardest part for me).

At the same time it forces me to edit the selected image and I try to test out different things and try to go for different looks every day. Only a week into this "experiment" I already noticed that it can get difficult to do everything right form start to finish. Sometimes I did something wrong while taking the photo and didn't notice until I got home (high ISO, bad focus, general blurriness...) or sometimes I just overdo processing... No matter what happens or how long I can keep this up, it's a new learning experience every day and that's why I started in the first place.

So here's last week's batch

Waiting here in London Stansted for our flight to Leipzig which was meant to leave at 9:50am. So we had to get up at 3am to get the bus to the airport.

I love how cheap airlines (especially Ryanair) plasters their slogans and ads all over the airport. With their tagline "the on time airline" they certainly make a bold claim. And all we heard this morning (about 15 minutes after the gate was meant to be closed) was a calm "your plane is scheduled to arrive at 12 o'clock".

And a further 20 minutes later the screens updated the departure time to 12:30. Quite a few hours late without a reason or explanation. And I keep reading "the on-time airline"... Riiight... You get what you pay for.

I'm writing this at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We're on our stopover from Melbourne to London with Malaysian Airlines. What a trip!! The kettle class in Malaysian is not bad. Spacious (!!!), acceptable food, movies on demand and very friendly staff. Noise-cancelling headphones are worth every penny if you're on a trip like this. I've never slept so well on any flight before! They block a lot of the engine noise (or aircon and mumbling at the airport) and some of the annoying other noises as well. You don't get out of a long flight feeling deaf and tired and you don't have to turn up the entertainment system too much. But here's one of the main problems with this:

The airline presets the announcement volume and while it can be adjusted separately, the lowest setting is still blowing your ears off! A solution could be some sort of volume control/attenuator in order to set the volume independently from the planes entertainment system.

It's on my wishlist for the next flight. But even without that, it's something you can live without because watching movies is less important if you can just relax and sleep or read. I didn't finish a single movie on this 8 hour trip!

Anyway... The airport in KL is getting a bit annoying. Nonstop announcements!!! There's no 5 second break between them. Seriously!?!

over and out... gotta check which gate we have to go to for our nice 14 hour hop to england
